The pieces featured on this site are conceptual prototypes for large outdoor public sculpture.. Conceived on a monumental scale (8' to 20' in height) but with soft gentle curves like those of the human body. The surfaces are smooth, inviting the viewer's touch. Click here to view.
My desire as an artist is analogous: to balance hard-edged, large-scale outdoor sculpture (angular pieces of iron and steel, made mostly by men) with equally monumental works of art that are unexpectedly soft, inviting, caress-able and nurturing, too.
These pieces are part plant and part creature, organic shapes of human consciousness. They are choreographed dances captured and frozen; they are airy and solid, breathing quietly and pulsing madly.
Tease the viewer: are these pieces home-like? womb-like? or both? The spaces - - like an outdoor room with no floor or roof and soft, wave-like walls - - suggest nurture and grandiosity. They embody our capacity for unconditional love and the possibility of transcending our limitations.
I draw Inspiration from the interdependence and growth of plants in nature. In their habits of yielding and adapting, they exhibit what I think of as a vital and necessary feminine dynamic.
The conceptual renderings show the pieces in a virtual landscape. Imagine seeing them from a distance and walking towards and around them. They entice you to be hyper-aware of the natural space we occupy.
